The button is the protagonist of Sardinian goldsmith culture: its spherical shape with a small protuberance recalls the fertile maternal breast of the goddess Tanit, the Punic goddess of fertility. It therefore represents a wish for prosperity and is used as an amulet. Depending on the preciousness of the material, size and number (two to close the collar of men’s shirts and seven to twelve for women’s ‘sa buttonera’) it defined the social status of the person wearing it and his family.
The special trimmings used to finish this pendant are typical of traditional Sardinian costumes, used mainly on skirts and in some countries also on the cuffs of men’s jackets.
Agate is a semi-precious stone linked to life force, balance and protection.
