925/1000 burnished silver cufflinks with two Sardinian buttons handcrafted using the filigree and lost-wax casting technique, finished and assembled by hand.
The button is the protagonist of Sardinian goldsmith culture: its spherical shape with a small protuberance recalls the fertile maternal breast of the goddess Tanit, the Punic goddess of fertility. Indeed, it represents a wish for prosperity and it is used as an amulet. Depending on the preciousness of the material, size and number (two to close the collar of men’s shirts and seven to twelve for women’s ‘sa buttonera’), it defined the social status of the person wearing it and his family.
